Departmental Protocols & Proformas

Warning

There are a few protocols that are specific to GRI ED that it would be useful to familiarise yourself with prior to starting your placement. Multiple proformas can be found in Majors A (opposite bay 9/10) and Majors B staff bases and should be used for conditions such as:

Children under two presentations

Head injuries

Intubation

Major trauma

Mental health

NOF fracture

Procedural Sedation

Sepsis

Swollen limb / DVT

Upper GI bleeding

Under 16 head injuries

Vaginal bleeding in the first trimester

Cauda Equina

Most back pain is managed through GP and Physiotherapy out with the hospital setting. GP and or Physiotherapists refer those people in whom they suspect cauda equina for further assessment.

Our role in these cases is to attempt to book the MRI scan for those arriving within the hours of 0900-1600. Perform a basic examination to allow you to check for the physical signs of cauda equina: urinary retention, loss of anal tone and perianal sensory loss. Request the MRI on Trakcare then phone the Radiologist. Refer the patient to ortho once the MRI is booked or for them to take over the care of the patient if MRI slots are unavailable.
