If the patient is immunocompromised, they should advise the dental helpline operator who in turn will prioritise their call directly to the Clinical Dental Manager.

Commence therapy and refer to dentist for scaling and oral hygiene advice.

Use in combination with antiseptic mouthwash if pain limits oral hygiene.

Drug details

Metronidazole 400mg three times daily

3 days

Chlorhexidine 0·12-0·2% (do not use within 30 mins of toothpaste). Rinse mouth with 10ml diluted with 10ml water for 1 minute twice daily.

Always spit out after use.

Use until lesions resolve or less pain allows oral hygiene.

Hydrogen Peroxide 6%. Rinse mouth with 15ml diluted in ½ glass warm water for 2 mins three times daily

Use until lesions resolve or less pain allows oral hygiene.
