What is the Liaison Psychiatry Team

We are a Mental Health Team which offers assessment and advice if you have attended the Emergency Department or you are a patient in the hospital and you are experiencing mental illness or have issues such as:

  • confusion or dementia

  • psychosis
  • a suicide attempt
  • problems with addiction
  • a learning disability

The service is for anyone 18 years and over.

Who are the Mental Health Liaison Team?

The Team consists of a Consultant Psychiatrist and qualified Mental Health Nurses.

The service operates Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm. There is also a Crisis service for acute mental illness which operates out with these hours.

What does the Liaison Psychiatry Team do?

The Team’s role is to assess your current mental health state and needs.

We would then make a recommendation on the next step, in collaboration with yourself and liaise with any other services involved in your care.

This could be one of a number of options that could include:

discharge home back to the care of your GP refer you to a specialist community service admit you to a psychiatric ward refer for further support at home with the Crisis Team
if you are an inpatient, we will also liaise with the staff on the ward

Any recommendations will be discussed with you, and your thoughts and preferences fully taken into consideration.
