Massage and aromatherapy

Massage and aromatherapy is available in Huntlyburn House one day a week. This is provided by Shona
Wilson, Clinical Aromatherapist AAMS (dip).

The physiotherapy department may also offer a similar service.

Oils are individually selected for each person. They are blended specifically for that person, after consultation/assessment of their needs.

Essential oils

Essential oils can help many stress related problems, especially if incorporated into a relaxing massage. Some people are more relaxed after a massage than after a nights sleep.

Your sleep pattern may improve after regular use of oils and massage. This in turn will improve emotional well being and reduce stress levels. Essential oils relieve mental tension. We know that when mental tension is relieved:

  • sleep patterns improve
  • physical tension is reduced
  • energy increases, and,
  • you become more relaxed and alert

Indian head massage

Indian head massage is a very relaxing therapy. It has been practised in India for many years. This therapy may be given over clothing. Or, it may be used together with essential oils and creams directly onto the skin.

The massage involves the upper back, neck, shoulders, arms, head and face. A firm and gentle rhythm is used to help release the build up of tension, which can be so uncomfortable.

  • It gives relief from physical tension, and also at an emotional level.
  • It calms the spirit and helps with relaxation, stress relief and can reduce headaches.

Assessment

Before treatment it is necessary for staff to complete an aromatherapy assessment form. This includes a
physical and psychiatric checklist.

Aromatherapy oils will then be prescribed for you and included in your care plan.

Please feel free to approach Shona Wilson if you have any questions or suggestions.

Treatments

The following treatments are available.

  • foot spa - This can be used with oils assisted by staff or at home to help relax
  • bath blends - add 5mls to a running bath, keep door closed, lie back and enjoy a long relaxing soak
  • shower blends - use 5mls on a sponge or cloth and experience uplifting, refreshing invigorating aromas
  • inhalant pads - used mainly to aid sleep, pop a swab with oil on your pillow. Alternatively use a tissue to aid relaxation or anxiety
  • room sprays - these can be applied to bed clothes, bedding and the area surrounding you when practicing relaxation techniques
  • creams - can be used any time to aid relaxation and well being, also useful with skin complaints
massage - hot stone may be incorporated to aid deep relaxation and tension relief
  • indian head massage

After treatment advice

  • drink plenty water to flush out toxins
  • rest as much as possible. You may feel tired after a massage
  • you might get a headache, feel emotional or have flu like symptoms. These will not last long and will be replaced by a feeling of vitality and well being
  • avoid drinking alcohol or smoking for the next 24 hours. These increase toxins in the body
  • avoid heavy meals. Processed foods can slow the healing process
  • do not have a shower or bath until at least six to eight hours after treatment. The oils need to penetrate the skin
  • avoid strong sunlight and do not use sun beds
