Nuclear medicine
Nuclear medicine scans use radioactive tracers to show the structure and functions of the organs in the body.
A Gamma Camera and computer are used to produce the scans. These are then processed and images prepared from which the Radiologist prepares a report for your doctor.
Before
Please arrange for your child to be absent from school on the day of the examination.
Please do not bring other children along with you.
Please encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids before attending, and to have a full bladder.
After
Your child will be asked to avoid close contact with children and pregnant ladies for 24 hours after the scan.
Renogram
The Paediatric Department has asked us to investigate your child's kidneys.
The kidney scanning procedure involves the injection of a tiny amount of radioactive material, which passes to the kidneys. Pictures are then taken on a special camera.
The amount of radioactivity is very small indeed and, in most cases, is less than that of an ordinary x-ray.
You will be asked to attend the children's ward where a small cannula will be inserted into a vein in your child's arm. After this you will come down to the Nuclear medicine department where the radioactive tracer is administered through this cannula. Your child will need to lie still on the imaging bed until the examination is over.
This may take up to 35 minutes.
Results
The results of the examination will be sent to the doctor or consultant who requested it.
