Nuclear medicine

Nuclear Medicine scans use radio-active tracers to show the structure and functions of the organs in the body.

A Gamma Camera and computer are used to produce the scans. These are then processed and images prepared from which the Radiologist prepares a report for your Doctor.

Before

  • Your child should have nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours before the scan.
  • Please bring a drink of milk, juice or if appropriate a bottle of baby's feed with you.

Isotope swallow

We have been asked to carry out an examination on: ____________________________________________

This examination is to show if acid is coming back up the gullet (refluxing) from the stomach. It involves drinking a tiny amount of radioactive tracer in some juice or milk, after which pictures are taken on a camera.

The examination will normally take 30 - 45 minutes.

Results

The results of this examination will be sent to the Doctor or Consultant who requested it.
