What is it?

It is a special x-ray test of your uterus and fallopian tubes. It will be carried out by a specially trained Nurse
or a Radiographer.

How is it done?

• a speculum will be placed in your vagina, like having a cervical smear taken
• a small plastic tube is then passed through the cervix into the uterine cavity
• a small balloon on the tip of the tube is then inflated to hold it in position
• many patients find this a little uncomfortable, like a period pain. You are welcome to take some of your usual pain relief medicine before you come in for the test
• some special clear x-ray dye is passed along the tube to fill your uterus and fallopian tubes. You may find this uncomfortable.
• X-rays will be taken to examine and record the procedure
A Consultant Radiologist will send a report to your Gynaecologist.

Important

It is essential that there is no possibility that you are pregnant when this test is performed as this test could damage an early pregnancy. The Radiology nurse will have talked to you about this before your test. We will confirm with you on the day of your test that there is no possibility that you are pregnant.

Please do not be offended by these questions.

After

When the tube and vaginal speculum have been removed, some of the clear dye may run back. You will be able to use washing and toilet facilities next to the x-ray room to clean up.

Please bring with you any pads that you feel you may need. Or, we will be happy to provide you with these.
