When a coil is inserted during a caesarean section, there is a 1 in 20 risk of the coil falling out and a small
chance that it does not sit properly in the womb.
We therefore recommend the coil is checked after 6 weeks to ensure it is correctly positioned to work effectively.
This is done by a vaginal examination to check the threads of the coil. If the threads are not visible, an ultrasound scan may be used.

To ensure adequate contraceptive protection prior to this check, we offer a contraceptive pill called Cerelle, a type of progesterone only pill (POP) or mini-pill.
Cerelle is safe to use if you are breastfeeding or experienced high blood pressure during your pregnancy.
Take one tablet at the same time every day until your coil has been checked.
