Write patient’s A&E number and the date on the white area of the label, this will be duplicated onto the band underneath. Remove this label and apply it to the BTS sample tube.
We are pleased to advise that deep linking capability, enabling users to directly download individual mobile toolkits, has now been released on the RDS mobile app. When you install the update, you will see that each toolkit has a small QR code icon the header area beside the search icon – see screenshot below. Clicking on this icon will open up a window with a full-size QR code and the alternative of a short URL for sharing with users. Instructions are provided.
You may need to actively install the update to install RDS app version 4.7.1 to see this improvement. Installing this update is also strongly recommended to get the full benefits of the new contingency arrangements – specifically, that if the RDS website should fail, you will still be able to download new mobile app toolkits.
To check your current RDS version, click on the three dots bottom right of the RDS app screen. This takes you to a “More” page where you will see the version number. To install latest updates:
On iPhones – go to the Apple store, click on your profile icon top right, scroll down to see the apps waiting to be updated and update the RDS app.
On Android phones – these can vary, but try going to the Google Play store, click on your profile icon top right, click on “Manage apps and device”, select and update the RDS app.
Please get in touch with ann.wales3@nhs.scot with any questions.
This is the system used in the Emergency Department for blood transfusion purposes where the patient’s identity/DOB/Address is not known and there is only an A&E number available.(For all other requests the A&E number alone should suffice.)
Write patient’s A&E number and the date on the white area of the label, this will be duplicated onto the band underneath. Remove this label and apply it to the BTS sample tube.
Wrap the band around the patient’s wrist or ankle so that the tape passes through the clip mechanism. Firmly close the clip.
Hold the clip firmly and tear off the 14 numbered labels from the band. Remove the protective backing from the end of the strip of labels and apply to the back of the BTS tube.
Remove one of the small numbered labels from the 14 attached to the BTS tube and use this in place of patient information to label the BTS request form. Inform BTS (NW ext 32953, PRI ext 13338) and send sample by porter.
If a second sample is required prior to the patient being identified write the A&E number and Typenex number on the form and the sample tube and inform BTS.
When blood products arrive from BTS they will be labelled with one of the small numbered stickers. Check the label on the blood against the two red labels still on the patient’s wrist band prior to transfusing.
