Pathway for women having intra-uterine contraception (IUC) fitted during planned caesarean birth (PCB)

Warning

Please report any inaccuracies or issues with this guideline using our online form

Please follow this pathway for women who have opted antenatally to have IUC fitted at the time of PCB. This should be followed for all women to ensure consistency of care and good clinical governance.

1.  Woman has agreed to have IUC fitted at time of PCB during consultation with midwife/ doctor.

2.  When consenting for surgery, re-check that the woman still wishes IUC and which type. Please ensure clear documentation of preference for IUD/IUS. On consent form write: Caesarean birth + insertion of “hormonal coil” OR “copper coil”.

3.  On day of surgery, when confirming consent, ensure woman still wishes IUC fitted.

4.  After completion of PCB, the card/ patient leaflet from IUC box should be filled in and attached to the “Advice following IUC fitting at the time of birth” leaflet. This should be given to the woman prior to transfer to the postnatal ward.

5.  An email be sent to Sandyford.Postpartum@ggc.scot.nhs.uk informing them that an IUC has been inserted so that follow up can be arranged.

    1. Please include the following details:
    2. Patient name / DOB / CHI number.
    3. Address / Postcode.
    4. Current contact number for patient.
    5. Date of delivery / insertion of IUC.
    6. Type of IUC inserted e.g. Levosert, Mirena, Slimline TT380 etc.
    7. Any need for interpreter.

6.  When documenting operation note on BadgerNet, choose drop down box that states “Intraoperative Contraception” – select “IUCD”. In the auto-populated drop down “Type of IUCD”  select “Other”  and document the NAME of the device e.g. Levosert, Mirena, Slimline TT380 etc, in the free text box.

7.  In IDL, again, please specify type of device e.g. Levosert, Mirena, Slimline TT380 etc. – documenting contraception should be part of your standard postnatal discharge template.
