Ear Problems

Warning

Subperichondral haematoma / Potential Cauliflower Ear

  • Needle aspiration
  • Pressure bandage
  • Next ENT clinic
  • Arrange via reception using virtual fracture clinic form

Tympanic Membrane Rupture

  • Keep dry
  • Avoid ear drops
  • Use antibiotics only if secondary to recurrent infection (not for traumatic perforation)
  • ENT clinic follow-up
  • Arrange via reception using virtual fracture clinic form

Wax

  • Advise wax softener e.g. Cerumol
  • Refer to GP
  • Do not undertake syringing

Ear Foreign Bodies

  • Kill insects with lignocaine or olive oil
  • Attempt to syringe out but beware swelling of vegetable matter
  • Refer ENT if any difficulty or suspicion of tympanic membrane damage

Acute Otitis Media

  • Antibiotics often prescribed but rarely useful
  • Consider if high temp and/or vomiting, or no response with 3 days treatment

Bell’s Palsy

  • Treat with Prednisolone 40-50mg per day for 10 days
  • Add aciclovir 800mg 5 x day if any facial pain as this may indicate a viral aetiology and impending vesicles
  • Formal ENT review is not required initially. Refer back to GP suggesting ENT review in 3-4 weeks if required.
