Services offered

Clinical Microbiology offers a comprehensive diagnostic Microbiology & Faecal Parasitology service that covers NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board, The service is offered by 2 main laboratory sites:

  • North sector’s Glasgow Royal Infirmary and
  • South sector’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The diagnostic service includes, culture and identification of microorganisms using the most modern state-of-the-art-technology, susceptibility testing of pathogenic organisms, direct microscopy and cell counts, environmental testing, and a continuous monitoring blood culture system. These are all supported by medically qualified personnel that offer an excellent clinical support and advice service. An out of hour’s service operates giving an all year 24hr service.

The North Sector Environmental Laboratory carries out testing in accordance with the requirements of ISO 17025:2017 and to satisfy the needs of the users.

Glasgow Royal Infirmary

Provides a diagnostic microbiology service for Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Princess Royal Maternity Hospital, Canniesburn Unit, Stobhill Hospital, Lightburn Hospital, Gartnavel General Hospitals, Glasgow Dental Hospital, Cowal Community Hospital, Victoria Hospital Rothesay and General Practices and Health Centres in North East Glasgow. This site also covers environmental testing for all areas within the GG&C estate and some private customers.

Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

Provides a diagnostic microbiology service for Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, the Royal Hospital for Children, the Victoria Infirmary and General Practices in Glasgow South catchment area, Clydebank HC and all GP practices in Clyde catchment area.

Sandyford central site:

A small service is also provided from the Sandyford Central Site in Glasgow from which a microscopy service for Genitourinary Medicine within GG&C is performed.
