Metronidazole 400mg every 12 hours orally for 7 days
Trichomonas in pregnancy and breastfeeding
If discharge is frothy, yellow and offensive with vulval itch or soreness and dysuria, consider trichomoniasis.
- Treat sexual partner(s) simultaneously. And advise patients to avoid sexual intercourse for at least 7 days and until they and their partner(s) have completed treatment and follow-up.
- In all cases, obtain a sexual history and test for other STI. DISCUSS with staff at the Chalmers Centre if you need help with contact tracing or if you are concerned that the woman is at ongoing risk of HIV, syphilis or hepatitis B/C
- Meta-analyses have concluded that there is no evidence of teratogenicity from the use of metronidazole during the first trimester of pregnancy. Metronidazole can be used in all stages of pregnancy and during breast feeding, although the taste of breast milk may be affected.
