Nose bleed acute and chronic (Epistaxis) (Guidelines)

Warning

Treatment options for acute nosebleeds

  • Co-phenylcaine spray
  • Nasal Cautery if bleeding site can be identified
  • Nasal packing e.g. Merocel nasal tampons
  • Consider coagulation status (warfarin etc)
  • Admit to hospital

Nosebleeds can be serious and life threatening.

For patients who have had recurrent nosebleeds consider advising the patient to:

  • Rest at home for the next 48 hours
  • Do not pick or blow nose
  • Do not bend down, strain, exercise, or lift anything heavy
  • Avoid hot food and drinks, alcohol and smoking
