Neurodevelopmental Assessment Service (NDAS) (Paediatric Guidelines)

Warning
If you have concerns about possible Neurodevelopmental Disorders, e.g.
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
  • Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD)
In the first instance:

Give parent / young person the NDAS leaflet and suggest that they make contact with the child’s Health Visitor or Early Years/School setting to discuss concerns (i.e. it is more helpful for HV or school to make the request, because they hold important information about the child’s functioning in the school setting). As this is a specialist service, there is a recommendation that children will have been through the staged approach and will have reached level 3 of this approach prior to a request to this service being made.

If parent/ young person still wishes the GP to refer:
  • If parents are in agreement, contact the named person for the child to discuss the appropriateness of a request for assessment at this stage.
  • If parents/ young person do not wish you to contact the named person, ask them to contact the NDAS coordinator to arrange a discussion with a member of the NDAS clinical team, or do this yourself.
  • Email nhsh.nds@nhs.scot preferably, or phone 01463 720057.
  • Give them the NDAS leaflet for young people and for parents and carers.
