St John’s Hospital guidance on anaesthesia for paediatric patients (excluding critically ill patients for which there is separate guidance) Anaesthetic services can be provided for children who are:-

  • Age 3 and over
  • ASA 1 or 2
  • To have minor / intermediate surgical procedures

The consultant should be aware of all children who are under 12. The consultant on call should be present in all children under 5, unless a senior member of the on-call team has the requisite experience (e.g. ST7, or competent Speciality Doctors).

Anaesthetic services may be provided, at the discretion of the anaesthetic consultant on call, for children:-

  • Under 3 years of age
  • ASA 2-3
  • Who require more prolonged / complex surgery
  • Those requiring time critical operations (e.g. button battery ingestion)

It should not be necessary to transfer any child from RHSC to here for surgery, unless the surgical equipment required is not available there (but they should still fit into the categories above).
