The Regional Head and Neck Surgical Service has been well established at St John’s Hospital, providing trainee anaesthetists valuable experience particularly in advanced airway management. The aim is to gain experience in a broad range of urgent and elective head and neck procedures, primarily in adults.

If you want to complete specific key capabilities in shared airway anaesthesia, you should arrange to see Dr Gillan at the beginning of your attachment to review of your training needs and agree the goals for your attachment.

Major MF cases start in th1 at 0730, please liaise with the consultant in advance if you are on one of these lists. Teaching will be provided during accompanied lists. However, for more senior Trainees working alone provides invaluable experience. During such lists you should be willing to use appropriate airway techniques that you have learnt.

The experienced ODPs are a very useful source of support in planning and practising these skills. For unaccompanied lists, Trainees should discuss any case for which they are concerned, either with the consultant who normally undertakes the list or with any other senior member of staff.

For major cases involving HDU care, Trainees are expected to review the case during the next post-operative day(s) as clinically indicated and as duties allow. Again, if you have concerns please speak to the responsible consultant or another senior member of staff.

An airway equipment library and practise area is available in the resource room within the theatre complex. Within this area there is a wide variety of current and historical airway management tools. In addition a folder of ENT related background articles is available in theatres 1, 2 and 3 – for reference use.
