Paediatric (<16yo) referrals outside West of Scotland

Warning

Eligibility guidelines are as follows (see also the relevant COBIS section Downloadable document)

  • All injuries ≥15% TBSA
  • Full thickness burns ≥7% TBSA
  • All patients requiring level 3 PICU AND significant early excision and grafting
  • All high voltage injuries
  • Other complex injuries or significant injuries to children younger than 1, subject to consultant-level discussions.

If the patient meets the criteria:

  • Ensure they have been triaged, treated and stabilised according to APLS/ EMSB principles.
  • Escalate to your on-call Consultant. Referrals cannot be accepted without Consultant-level approval.
  • Complete the e-referral form Downloadable document and email it to: ggc.burnshubreferrals@nhs.scot and at least one of the Plastic Surgery on call team in Glasgow.
  • Contact the Plastic Surgery on-call service in Glasgow and refer the patient, as follows:
    • If in hours, directly to Royal Hospital for Children Plastic Surgery Registrar (escalate to RHC Consultant if unable to reach) via switchboard 0141 201 0000. Do not refer to GRI in-hours.
    • If out of hours contact on-call Plastic Surgery Registrar via GRI switchboard 0141 211 4000
    • If unable to reach, please escalate to on-call 1st / 2nd on Consultant via GRI switchboard.

If the patient does not meet the criteria:

  • It is likely that the patient is best managed in your local Burn Unit/ Facility.
  • To find the appropriate unit, check the COBIS patient referral pathway webpage link out to external site
  • In certain cases, patients can be transferred to the Burn Centre even if they don't meet the referral criteria. These cases must always be discussed at Consultant level. Please engage your Consultant accordingly.
  • Mutual aid requests can be considered, according to GGC policy. These will not be granted out of hours and will be discussed on the next working day. Appropriate local arrangements must be made until then.
