Identify Pupils at Risk
Support staff should know which pupils in the school have allergies and those that are high risk for anaphylaxis.
Management plans
Pupils diagnosed with allergies will have a personalised allergy action plan, given by a healthcare professional. An example is the BSACI allergy action plan. This will state the allergen(s) to avoid and the management for mild/moderate or severe reactions.
Support staff should familiarise themselves with the plan and discuss with the child and their parent/ carer(s) about the allergy. They should also be aware of where the medication is stored in the school and whether the child carries this or not.
All staff should know how to respond to emergencies even if there are no pupils at risk of anaphylaxis in the school.
