Functional iron deficiency

Functional Iron deficiency occurs in proinflammatory states where Hepcidin is upregulated. In this situation PO Iron therapy is unlikely to be effective. IV Iron may have a role and produce Hb increment in some patients, but in others combination therapy with erythropoeitin may be required.
