Chapter 20. Stoma Care

Warning

General Notes

For stoma related guidance, please refer to the National Stoma Quality Improvement SLWG (NSQIG) Final Report (November 2019) and the NHS Lanarkshire Prescribing Guidance for Stoma Accessories and Appliances (NHSL Staff Access Only).

The Specification of Requirements for Dispensing and Supply of Stoma Appliances to Patients in the Community for NHS Scotland sets out the service standards to be met by all Community Pharmacy contractors and Dispensing Appliance Contractors (DACs).

DACs and Community Pharmacy contractors must supply wipes and disposal bags with ostomy products free of charge. These do not need to be added to the prescription.

GP practices will receive a Stoma Care Patient Summary for new patients and those attending the NHSL stoma service. This document summarises all stoma products and monthly quantities required for each patient. Please file in the patient record accordingly.

Stoma supplies are no longer included in the Scottish Drug Tariff; they are now being managed by National Procurement which is aligning with the NHS England and Wales Drug Tariff. The link to the National Procurement webpage is here: Stoma Supplies.

To establish whether a product is prescribable, the exceptions list available at the link above, and the NHS England and Wales Drug Tariff should both be checked. The exceptions list details the products that are not prescribable in Scotland.

The sizes listed below are not exhaustive. Any size of a formulary product can be supplied, provided it is included in the NHS England and Wales Drug Tariff and not included in the exceptions list.
