Ferno Germa vacuum mattress

  • The Ferno Germa Vacuum mattress (Vacmat) is a spinal immobilisation device and stretcher.
  • The Ninewells ED will use this for multiply injured patients requiring transfer to CT / interventional radiology / theatre.
  • The Vacmat is suitable for CT and interventional radiology use.

The maximum load is 250kg (IP CT 227kg). Mattress weighs 8.5kg.

On receipt of trauma standby, retrieve the mattress from the procedure room. (TTT patients may arrive on TTT Vacmat in which case their care will continue on the same Vacmat.)

1.Flatten the Vacmat out on trolley and ensure the beads within the plastic mattress are evenly distributed. This may require the mattress to be shaken.

2. Place an absorbent sheet on top of the FGV mattress. Use a green foil mediwrap.

3. Ensure the large black valve has been turned clockwise. This closes the valve.

4. Using the SAS scoop place patient on to the Vacmat then remove the scoop. Retain the spina lcollar or apply as required by the circumstances.

5.After initial assessment and resuscitation requirements mould the mattress around the patient including the wings around the head. Ensure the mattress material does not press on the top of the head or soles of the feet.

6.Fasten the straps and belts around the patient as per colour code. (Head straps: forehead - yellow, Chin - blue). Take care with the belts over shins and elbows to avoid undue pressure. (The bright orange extension straps avoid top heavy postures being adopted by staff when undertaking lateral transfer manoeuvre).

7. Use wall suction or hand pump to remove air from the FGV mattress until it is hard.

8. If access is needed to areas of the patient that are blocked by the FGV mattress the air can be released by an anticlockwise turn of the valve. N.B. The valve must be closed and air evacuated until the FGV mattress is hard again before the mattress can be used for further patient transfers.

9. Use extension straps for FGV mattress when performing a lateral transfer e.g. transfer onto CT scanner.

10.Scoop off mattress if spinal instability identified or lateral slide with blue slide if skeletal stability.

11. If the FGV mattress becomes soiled it can be wiped with 70% alcohol or Lysetol AF. Belts are detachable and washable at 60 degrees.
