HIV post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and follow up

Referral for assessment following a blood borne virus exposure event and follow up after HIV Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) prescription

ED procedure

Health Care Workers:

  • HCWs should only attend the ED where HIV prescription is indicated after risk assessment using the NHS Tayside protocol ‘Occupational injury –needlestick’, available on Staffnet.
  • HCWs should present to the ED with completed risk assessment documentation.
  • Any HCW attending without such documentation should not be registered and should be asked to return to their ward area to have this completed.

Non-health Care Workers:

Seen as a normal ED patient and managed in accord with the NHS Tayside protocol:Guidance for management of exposure events where there is a risk of transmission of blood borne viruses (HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C) in the community available on Staffnet

The final decision regarding PEP prescription lies with the senior doctor in the ED.

Follow-up for patients prescribed HIV PEP

Patients risk assessed as requiring HIV PEP should have the referral form from the above protocols completed, documented on the back of the ED card, and sent via email by ED reception to the appropriate service.
