This policy is intended to guide prescribers in NHS Dumfries and Galloway on the choice of appropriate antibiotic treatment of infections in patients presenting in primary care. The policy is suitable to be used for patients who have been assessed and deemed suitable for treatment without hospital admission.

Appropriate specimens for microbiology should be taken whenever possible before administering antibiotics; however this will depend upon the severity of the illness and the nature of the specimen.

Consideration should be given to delayed antibiotic prescriptions.

The initial treatment may need to be modified according to clinical response and/or results of microbiology and other investigations.

The doses recommended are based on normal renal/hepatic function.

See the BNF BNFC , and Renal Drug Database for dose adjustments in renal/hepatic impairment.
