Summary: arrangements for vaccination and human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG)

HRIG

  • Where HRIG is required, this will be administered in ED if within 24 hours of first attendance.
  • Outside of this, for adult patients it will be administered by Rapid Assessment and Care, using standard referral pathways, (Mon-Fri, 9am- 5pm) or via CAU (OOH). For patients <16 years old, this will be provided by the Paediatric team in Ward 1A/C.

Vaccination

  • Where possible, vaccination will be delivered by services within the Immunisation Coordination Team. This includes during the OOH period if the Immunisation Coordination Team have been advised and acknowledge the referral within hours (Mon-Fri, 9am – 5pm, excluding public holidays)
  • If individuals present out of hours to ED, the vaccine should be given in ED if it is required at that time.
  • If assessment is undertaken by GP/AUCS, the patient should be referred to RAC (Mon-Fri, 9am- 5pm) or CAU (OOH) to be vaccinated +/- get HRIG if there are no wounds requiring management. If the patient is <16 years old, they should be referred to Ward 1A/C. If there are wounds requiring management, the patient should be referred to the ED.
  • If a vaccine is required during a future out of hours period and the Immunisation Coordination Team have not been notified and the referral accepted, the patient should be referred to CAU if an adult, or ward 1A/C if they are <16 years old. Referrals should detail the vaccine required on the advice of the Infection Specialist.
  • If vaccinations are arranged out of hours, the Immunisation Coordination Team and HPT should be informed by the Infection Specialist by email to allow for follow up within hours.
