Rabies vaccine and HRIG stock

Vaccine stock is held in the Vaccine Holding Centre within Ayr Hospital Pharmacy. It can be ordered by emailing aa.clinical_pharmacy_storesvaccine_orders@aapct.scot.nhs.uk. For out of hours, one rabies vaccine is available in each emergency cupboard at UHC and UHA. If further stock is needed then the on call pharmacist can be contacted via NHS AA Switchboard who will obtain further stock from UHA Vaccine fridge (holds 6 vials as stock).

Human Rabies Immunoglobulin (HRIG) is stored centrally (stock obtained through Rarely Used and Urgent Medicines (RUUM) list. This can be ordered by contacting the ward pharmacist. For stock required out of hours, contact the on call pharmacist via NHS AA Switchboard.

Prescriptions and record keeping

Prescriptions for the initial vaccination and HRIG will usually be recorded on the ED Kardex.

Prescriptions and administration records for Rapid Assessment and Care (RAC)/Combined Assessment Unit (CAU) will be maintained on HEPMA.

Vaccinations delivered by the mass vaccination service will be recorded on either a Travel Health risk assessment documentation or a non-routine assessment form and the GP informed by email.

Patient specific directions (PSDs) supplied by the Health Protection Team will be entered into HPzone.
