Scenario: Individual seeking PrEP

Pre-exposure prophylaxis rabies pathway

  1. Individuals seeking pre-exposure prophylaxis for travel should be signposted to their employers occupational health provider (if employment related) or travel clinics. For the small proportion of individuals who are eligible for PrEP on the NHS, they should be asked to contact the Travel Health Service by email: [aa.travelhealthenquiries@aapct.scot.nhs.uk ].
  2. The Travel Health Service clinicians will collect details to inform the risk assessment. This will be discussed with Infectious Diseases to decide on whether to commence PrEP vaccination.
  3. Vaccination will be provided by the Travel Health Service on the advice of Infectious Diseases. Any required PSDs will be provided by the Health Protection Team (HPT). The Travel Health Service should email the HPT clinical details for this request.
  4. Information detailing the vaccinations administered will be sent to the GP by admin support for the Immunisation Coordination Team.

Scenario: Individual with previous PrEP seeking antibody levels and booster

  1. Individuals who have previously had PrEP may seek antibody levels and booster vaccinations. Individuals seeking this for travel or work should be signposted to travel clinics and their employers occupational health provider respectively. Where this can be performed on the NHS, they should be referred to the Immunisation Coordination Team by email: immunisationcoordinationteam@aapct.scot.nhs.uk
  2. The Immunisation Coordination Team will collect details and discuss with Infectious Diseases. If appropriate, Infectious Diseases will arrange for antibody titre testing and provide vaccination advice based on the result.
  3. Vaccination will be provided by the Immunisation Coordination Team either in the non-routine vaccination service or within the travel health service (whichever is deemed the most appropriate) on the advice of Infectious Diseases. The HPT should be copied in to any email correspondence and will provide any required patient specific directions (PSDs).
  4. Information detailing the vaccinations administered will be sent to the GP by admin support for the Immunisation Coordination Team.
