Psychiatry booklist:

The following are good books to look at as texts covering key psychiatric disorders

1. Puri, B.K., Hall, A.D. (2004). Revision Notes in Psychiatry. Hodder Arnold: London.

2. Wright, P., Phelan, M., Stern, J. (1999). Core Psychiatry. Saunders: Edinburgh.

3. Stringer, S., Hurn, J., Burnside, A., (2016). Psychiatry: Breaking the ICE. Introductions, common tasks and emergencies for trainees. Wiley Blackwell: Chichester.

Psychotherapy:

1. Brown D, Pedder J, Bateman, A. (2000). Introduction to Psychotherapy: An Outline of Psychodynamic Principles and Practice. Routledge: London. (covers the range of talking therapies)

2. Mind over Mood: Greenberger, D., and Padesky, C. (1995). Guildford.  A patient based "how to" book covering cognitive behaviour therapy - but excellent reading for students wanting to discover what changes patients can make that can make a difference to how they feel

Psychiatric symptoms and diagnosis:

1. Sims A (2002) Symptoms in the Mind. An Introduction to Descriptive Psychopathology, Third Edition. Bailliere Tindall: London. (this will help you discover the language of psychiatry)

2.  ICD10 (WHO, 1992), or the Pocket Guide to ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders. Cooper, J. (1994) Churchill Livingstone.

Medication

1. Stahl (2000) Essential Psychopharmacology (full of diagrams/graphs/illustrations - which are really helpful to understand this otherwise quite difficult subject!)

2. British National Formulary (BNF)

Larger books for reference:

1. Johnstone E, Cunningham-Owens, D.G., Lawrie, S. M., Sharpe, M., Freeman C.P.L. (2004) Companion to Psychiatric Studies, Seventh Edition. Churchill

Livingstone: Edinburgh.

2. Shorter Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry. Gelder et al, (2006). Oxford University Press
