PrAMS - PRegnancy Anaemia Management in Scotland

Warning
Please report any inaccuracies or issues with this guideline using our online form

GGC PrAMS is part of a national improvement project aiming to optimise haemoglobin during pregnancy.

This early intervention, to treat low iron stores, complements the existing Management of iron deficiency during pregnancy and the puerperium GGC Guideline.

Its key features are

  • Offer all women a FBC and Serum ferritin at Booking, 28 weeks and during the third trimester (34-38 weeks).
  • Offer all women with a serum ferritin <30ug/l once daily iron for the remainder of their pregnancy and for 3 months postnatally.

The pathways for interpreting FBC and ferritin results are below, as is the patient information leaflet.

If management rather than prevention is appropriate these pathways will guide you to the Management of iron deficiency during pregnancy and the puerperium GGC Guideline. It is also important to remember that there are other causes of Anaemia, and to refer to the Guideline for more information.

Queries about the individual management of women’s care should always be discussed with their obstetrician.
