What is Ramipril? (Tritace, Triapin, Altace)

  • Ramipril is used to treat high blood pressure or heart failure, or to protect your heart from further damage after a heart attack.
  • It widens your blood vessels and makes your kidneys push less water back into your blood. These actions help to decrease blood pressure
  • Ramipril is one of a family of medicines called Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACE Inhibitors). They are called this because they achieve their effect on your blood vessels by blocking the action of a chemical called Angiotensin Converting Enzyme.

How likely is Ramipril to help me?

Key

  • This grey face represents the number of people in the survey group.
  • This green face represents the one person in the survey group that the medicine has helped.

Research suggests:

In a group of 270 patients at high risk of heart disease, Ramipril will prevent one person  from this group (on average) from dying over a period of one year.  In this study, Ramipril also reduced the risk of heart attack, stroke, coronary revascularisation and heart failure.

This picture illustrates how likely it is that a person taking Ramipril will  get this benefit.
