Dementia is the term given to symptoms caused by diseases that affect the structure of the brain.  While memory loss is one of the most well know symptoms there are others such as difficulty planning, difficulty problem solving or trouble finding the right words.  Dementia can impact on thinking speed, understanding, mood and behaviour, everyone’s experience of dementia is unique.

Dementia is thought to affect around 90,000 in Scotland.  The majority of people affected are over the age of 65 and the likelihood of experiencing dementia increases with age.  Those who are found to have dementia that are under 65 are considered to have young onset dementia.

Dementia is a progressive disease meaning that it gets worse over time but there are ways to help with symptoms and there are services and supports which can enable people experiencing dementia to live a life they enjoy as independently as possible
