Are there foods I need to limit?

Warning

Depending on the stage of your kidney disease and your blood results, you may be advised to limit certain foods in your diet. Please do not follow any dietary restrictions unless advised to do so by your renal doctor, nurse or dietitian.

Salt

Limiting salt intake is beneficial for patients at all stages of CKD. Kidney patients should limit their salt intake to 6g/day. Kidney patients who have diabetes, should limit their salt intake to 5g/day. There is guidance on salt intake in this diet and CKD video produced by NHSGGC Kidney Dietitians

Fluid

When your kidneys are not working properly, they may not be able to get rid of excess fluid. This can cause fluid overload and can put a strain on your heart. You may be asked to limit your fluid intake. Limiting your salt intake will help you manage your thirst. It’s important to count the fluid from foods in your fluid intake e.g. soups, yoghurts, ice-cream. Guidance on managing salt and fluid levels can be found here:  Managing your fluid and salt levels | Kidney Care UK

Potassium

If the potassium level in your blood is raised, you may be asked to reduce high potassium foods in your diet. Please do not follow a low potassium diet unless advised to do so by your renal doctor, nurse or dietitian. Information on low potassium diet can be found in this low potassium diet video produced by NHSGGC Kidney Dietitians:

Low potassium dietary advice can also be found here: Lowering your potassium levels | Kidney Care UK

Phosphate

If the phosphate level in your blood is raised, you may be asked to reduce high phosphate foods in your diet. Please do not follow a low phosphate diet unless advised to do so by your renal doctor, nurse or dietitian.
