Please update your RDS mobile app to version 4.7.1

We are pleased to advise that deep linking capability, enabling users to directly download individual mobile toolkits, has now been released on the RDS mobile app. When you install the update, you will see that each toolkit has a small QR code icon the header area beside the search icon – see screenshot below. Clicking on this icon will open up a window with a full-size QR code and the alternative of a short URL for sharing with users. Instructions are provided.

You may need to actively install the update to install RDS app version 4.7.1 to see this improvement. Installing this update is also strongly recommended to get the full benefits of the new contingency arrangements – specifically, that if the RDS website should fail, you will still be able to download new mobile app toolkits.

To check your current RDS version, click on the three dots bottom right of the RDS app screen. This takes you to a “More” page where you will see the version number.  To install latest updates:

On iPhones – go to the Apple store, click on your profile icon top right, scroll down to see the apps waiting to be updated and update the RDS app.

On Android phones – these can vary, but try going to the Google Play store, click on your profile icon top right, click on “Manage apps and device”, select and update the RDS app.

Emergency Transfer to Maternity Hospital in Greater Glasgow and Clyde (351)

Warning

Objectives

This guideline covers managing the safe and effective emergency transfer of pregnant women to a maternity hospital within Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Scope

All pregnant women within GG&C locale

Audience

All midwifery and Obstetric staff working within Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Please report any inaccuracies or issues with this guideline using our online form

There is no Obstetric Flying Squad Provision.

All emergency transfers into Obstetric Hospital within GG&C should be by emergency ambulance.

An ”ABCDE” approach to any acute issue should be implemented with whatever options available without delaying timely transfer.

Guideline

Home Birth Team / Community Midwives / Community Midwifery Unit (CMU) requiring emergency patient transfer to hospital should dial 999 for emergency ambulance.

  • If the lives of the mother and/or fetus (or neonate) are thought to be in danger, the initial call to SAS (Scottish Ambulance Service) should state clearly there is an ‘URGENT THREAT TO LIFE’ (7 minute response time).

  • If there is no evidence of maternal or fetal compromise, an ‘urgent’ ambulance should be requested (expected to arrive within the hour) - in the event of any change in the condition of the mother or the fetus, the request should be upgraded to ‘urgent threat to life’.

  • In circumstances where the mother requires emergency transfer after birth, but there are no immediate neonatal concerns, it is recommended these babies travel to hospital with the birthing partner in their own transport. Hospital taxi can be arranged if required.

If possible, the midwife should also phone the Labour Ward coordinator of the appropriate hospital and give details of the transfer. If this is not possible, ambulance control should be requested to pass on information.
