Management of pregnant young people under the age of 16

Warning

If pregnancy is confirmed in a young person under 16 years old or vulnerable young person aged 16 to 18:

  • Complete risk assessment on NaSH or an appropriate proforma and scan into NaSH.
    • Involve senior staff if appropriate or needing immediate advice on Child Protection issues.
  • Discuss options.
  • Provide support for decision-making process (may take several visits).
  • Plan for follow up if young person defaults next appointment.

If young person wishes to proceed with pregnancy

  • Check address & GP details.
  • Check school details if appropriate.
  • Check social worker details if appropriate.
  • Explain the local referral pathway to antenatal care.
  • Give the young person written confirmation to show to their GP/midwife or, directly refer them to antenatal care if they prefer you to do this.
  • Consider special needs in pregnancy referral as appropriate to local pathways.
    • Is this referral to a midwife for young mums?
  • Agree a plan to ensure you can check the young person has been referred to obstetrics (that is verifiable either through checking the hospital EPR that a referral has been made or contacting the primary care team).
    • Check on hospital EPR patient was seen.

Advise that you will share information with an appropriate professional (GP, social worker) if you cannot verify that the young person has told an appropriate person about their pregnancy (GP, social worker, parent).

If young person wishes termination of pregnancy

  • Check address & GP details.
  • Check school details if appropriate.
  • Check social worker details if appropriate.
  • Explain the local referral pathway to termination of pregnancy services and what the process would entail.
  • Encourage young person to talk to parents/carers and GP, but this is not essential if the young person has capacity.
  • Arrange appointment at TOPAR or local hospital as appropriate.
  • Agree a plan to ensure you can check the young person has been referred at termination of pregnancy services (that is verifiable either through checking the hospital EPR that a referral has been made or contacting the primary care team).
    • Check on hospital EPR patient was seen.

Advise that you will share information with an appropriate professional (GP, social worker) if you cannot verify that the young person has attended for a termination of pregnancy, or has decided to keep the pregnancy and has made contact with an appropriate person (GP, social worker, parent).
