Adolescent pregnancy

  • The additional demands that pregnancy places on the still developing body of an adolescent may present physical risks including placenta praevia, hypertension, premature birth, low birth weight and anaemia.
  • Teenage pregnancy and early parenthood may also present psychological risks to wellbeing.
  • Education, training and employment limitations may increase the risk of poverty for teenage parents and their children.

 

Women aged over 35

  • There is increased risk of chromosomal disorders such as Down’s syndrome, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, complications such as gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, placenta previa and premature birth.
