Signs /Symptoms

  • Ganglion cysts look and feel like a smooth lump under the skin.
  • Ganglions usually form near joints or over extensor tendons.
  • 3 in 4 ganglions form near the wrist.
  • Ganglions are harmless, but can sometimes be painful especially if bumped or knocked. They are not usually disruptive to function

Advice in Primary Care

  • A ganglion will often disappear or become less painful after a year or 2.
  • Best to leave alone

Actions in Primary Care

  • Issue GANGLIONIC CYST PATIENT LETTER* to patient:
  • Reassure patient ganglions are best left alone where possible
  • It is not advised to hit nodule with a book or any other heavy objects
  • Remember if nodules grow rapidly or become irregular in shape this may warrant a more urgent referral for review.

Referral to Secondary Care

  • If ganglion is pressing on a nerve, causing weakness, numbness or pain

Refer via SCI Gateway to Occupational Therapy Hand Clinic and include following in referral:

  • Duration of symptoms
  • Precise location of ganglion
  • Problem/issues ganglion causing patient
