Occupational therapy services offer an outpatient service for people who require a specialist assessment in an outpatient setting. This service covers patients over the age of 18 with no maximum age range that require specialist cognitive or perceptual assessment.

Who to refer:

If someone is experiencing a change in function or difficulty with activities of daily living. If so, they may benefit from a referral to an Occupational Therapy service. There are 2 available pathways. Please see this document for further details. The occupational therapist will arrange for the patient to either attend a clinic appointment at the patient’s local hospital or a domiciliary visit can be arranged if required.

Patients routinely only require a one off assessment and/or follow up call, however if the patient requires further intervention this can be arranged.

Referrals onto other services include; Care and Repair, Borders carers centre, third sector services such as red cross, South East Scotland mobility and assistive technology centre (SMART) and adult social care services.

Who not to Refer:

For patients that require an assessment at home due to experiencing a change in function or difficulty with activities of daily living they may benefit from a referral to social services – please refer to the Adult Social Care page

How to refer:

We always welcome a discussion with the referring GP if they wish – please see below for contact numbers. Occupational therapy is a Monday to Friday service 08.30am - 16.30.

If patients require an outpatient specialist assessment in a clinical setting please refer to NHS Borders Occupational Therapy Outpatients service completing the outpatient referral form and email to:

Please note there is currently no option to refer via SCI gateway for OT referrals from primary care.

GPs please gain consent from the patient prior to referring to OT and explain to the patient/carers the reason why they are being referred.
