Services

  • NHS Borders Stoma Service covers the whole of the Scottish Borders which includes BGH, all community hospitals, residential/nursing home and people in their own homes.
  • We consist of experienced specialist nurses with access to the surgical team
  • We have roughly 450 patients on our service. Most are referred from BGH however we cover NHS Lothian and other NHS trusts if the patient is a Scottish Borders resident and has a Scottish Borders GP.
  • We offer advice and guidance to all patients and their families pre and post op.
  • We advise nursing staff in the community as there are no community stoma nurses in Scotland
  • We ensure the best stoma products are used for the patient but are aware of the cost also.
  • We offer advice to GPs and ANPs in the community

 

Following a stoma a patient can expect the following follow up:

Day 1- on ward- face to face review and education

Day of discharge- face to face review and education

1 week post discharge- telephone review

2 weeks post discharge- clinic review

4 weeks post discharge- clinic review

6 months post discharge- clinic review

Yearly telephone review thereafter

Patients will have the contact details (Specialist nurse: 01896 827072) for the service and are able to get in contact directly in between reviews if required.

There is a twice weekly stoma clinic on Wednesdays and Fridays for review of patients which can be referred to by GPs and community practitioners.

Who to refer:

  • Patients who have stoma related problems

Who not to refer:

  • Patients who have gastrointestinal problems not related to their stoma: e.g diarrhoea
    • Please consider sending stool cultures and managing as normal
