Warning

Endocrinology is a specialty that encompasses diverse conditions. The guidance which follows is intended to address common scenarios.  If in doubt, all endocrine consultants welcome requests for advice via the generic inbox above as well as referrals. Paediatric endocrinology routinely accepts referrals up to the age of 16 years, and up to 18 years if the referral relates to pubertal delay, issues regarding growth or absent vaginal bleeding.

Services

The endocrine team provide endocrine clinics, encompassing all aspects of endocrinology, at Borders General Hospital. We currently have three consultants (Drs Williamson, Muthukrishnan, Pacitti) who provide endocrine clinics.

Patients who might require input from the tertiary centres in Lothian should come via the Borders endocrine service first.

The main exception to that is that patients with confirmed neuro-endocrine tumours (NETs) are usually seen directly in the multidisciplinary clinic at Western General Hospital in Edinburgh (people who are suspected, but not confirmed, to have a neuroendocrine tumour should be referred to endocrinology at the Borders General Hospital).

Who to refer, who not to refer, how to refer

Please note different categories for specific referral advice:

  • Thyroid
  • Reproductive endocrinology
  • Adrenal
  • Pituitary
  • Bone and calcium

How to refer:

Electronically via SCI gateway. If advice is needed rather than a clinic appointment, this can be requested via the diabetes.endocrinology@borders.scot.nhs.uk inbox.
