Micro Organisms

Commonly bacterial STI pathogen in <35yr olds -  self referral to GU medicine or first void urine for Chlamydia/Gonorhoea PCR (ensure plan for follow-up of results)

Commonly non-STI bacteria pathogen e.g. E.coli, Klebsiella, Proteus etc in >35yr olds - refer for urology follow-up

First Line

Important: Therapy

Doxycycline 100mg PO 12 hourly

 

or if allergy/drug interaction:

Ofloxacin 400mg PO daily (consider safety issues)

Treatment duration: 14 days (may require longer guided by extent of infection and clinical response)

If poor clinical response consider imaging to exclude more complicated infection e.g. scrotal abscess
