Clinical features

  • Back pain / tenderness over spine
  • Fever
  • Possible bowel and bladder dysfunction
  • Possible focal neurological signs below the level of the lesion

Investigations

  • Blood culture
  • MRI spine
  • Biopsy from lesion (interventional radiology or neuroradiology)
    • Pre-treatment biopsy for culture gives the best chance of successful treatment and this should always be sought

Immediate treatment may be required for septic patients or where neurological compromise is present
