Being active is one of the keys to a longer, happier life and can reduce the risk of many diseases, manage existing conditions, and develop and maintain physical and mental function.

Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. It takes many forms, occurs in many settings, and has many purposes (e.g. daily activity, active recreation, and sport). Health-enhancing physical activity includes multiple types of activity: cardiovascular; muscle and bone strengthening; and balance.

Muscle and bone mass decline naturally as we age. Muscle strength, bone health and the ability to balance underpin physical function and our ability to live independently, particularly later in life.

Within this section you will find resources that support staff knowledge, learning and development on physical activity for ageing well, public leaflets and resources to support those within your care to encourage and enable them to be active and examples of practice for local support available and support service improvements and developments.
