Corticosteroid with antibacterial (Formulary)

Please consider if a steroid emergency card needs to be given to the patient alongside the traditional steroid treatment card.  This is to support the timely recognition and treatment of potential adrenal crisis and is suitable for some patients on oral, inhaled, topical or rectal steroids.  For more information, including which patients should receive the card, see HIS for details.  Steroid emergency cards have been distributed to, hospitals, GP surgeries and community pharmacies. Primary care can order replacement cards from 01463 706886.

BETAMETHASONE WITH NEOMYCIN

Formulation:

Drops (betamethasone 0·1%, neomycin 0·5%)

Dosage:

Apply 2 to 3 drops into the ear every 3 to 4 hours; reduce frequency when relief obtained.

DEXAMETHASONE WITH FRAMYCETIN SULFATE AND GRAMICIDIN

Drops (dexamethasone 0·05%, framycetin 0·5%, gramicidin 0·005%) (Sofradex®)

Dosage:

Apply 2 to 3 drops into the ear 3 to 4 times daily.

FLUMETASONE WITH CLIOQUINOL

Dosage:

Apply 2 to 3 drops into the ear twice daily for up to 7 days.

GENTAMICIN WITH HYDROCORTISONE

Apply 2 to 4 drops into the ear 3 to 4 times daily and at night.

Dosage:

Apply 1 metered spray into the ear 3 times daily.
