Caring for your baby

Warning

Bonding with your baby is really important.  To help with this, you are actively encouraged to be as involved as possible in carrying out every-day cares and having cuddles with your baby.

This will happen as soon as this is safely possible, which varies with each baby and family.

Examples of how we will encourage your contact and bonding include:

  • regular skin-to-skin time, also called "kangaroo" care
  • feeding your baby
  • changing their nappy
  • dressing them in clothes from home
  • reading them books
  • taking photos and videos to make memories

We understand it is difficult to leave your babies in the unit when you go home.  We offer video updates to try and help with this, and you are welcome to phone for an update at any time.

At any point, you are encouraged to raise any concerns that you may have with a member of our team - the nurse or doctor looking after your baby, or any other member of the team.
