The TMJ is another name for the jaw. The jaw is made up of the mandible (the lower jaw) and the temporal bone (the socket).
Causes of TMJ pain include:
- overactivity of the jaw muscles (eg. From grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw)
- ?trauma as such a blow to the jaw
- wear and tear of the joint
- stress
What are the signs and symptoms of TMJ dysfunction?
There are many signs of problems with the TMJ:
- pain in the jaw and facial muscles
- clicking or grinding of the jaw
- headaches
- dizziness
- difficulty opening or closing the mouth properly
- pain on chewing, talking and yawning
- ringing in the ears.
