Faecal samples

My patient’s stool sample has cultured Campylobacter spp, do I need to treat?

Campylobacter infection is usually a self-limiting illness and does NOT require antibiotics unless the patient belongs to an at risk group or has particularly severe/refractory disease.  At risk groups include the immunosuppressed, elderly and pregnant. The mainstay of treatment for most patients is rehydration.  If your patient falls into a category where antimicrobial treatment is advised, please contact the duty microbiologist for advice.  Fluoroquinolone resistance is high so a macrolide is usually preferred empirical treatment.
