Welcome to NHS Borders Diabetes Dietitians (adults) landing page.

Diabetes Dietitians work as part of the Diabetes Team to help patients in managing their diabetes. We see adult patients with all types of Diabetes (including gestational diabetes) for specialist dietary advice.

We are also involved in delivering Structured Education –which can involve both group sessions and 1:1 sessions. We are based at the Borders General Hospital but run clinics in Duns, Eyemouth, Hawick, Kelso and Peebles also.

We can help patients to adjust insulin –as per local guideline ‘Guideline for Insulin Adjustment by Diabetes Specialist Dietitians’ 

Who to Refer:

Adults with a new Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes-should be referred to the Control IT programme (via this referral form) -can also be referred via form on SCI-Gateway

Referral criteria for inpatients / outpatients:

  • Patients with Type 2 Diabetes on oral hypoglycaemic agents +/- insulin with sub-optimal control
  • Patients with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes should be referred to Control IT
  • Conversions to insulin or GLP-1 therapy (if appropriate)
  • Patients with newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes
  • Anyone with Diabetes on oral hypoglycaemic agents/insulin requiring nutritional support
  • Anyone who has diabetes and is pregnant
  • Gestational Diabetes (seen in High Risk Pregnancy clinic)
  • Those requiring carbohydrate counting advice (1:1 or group sessions)
  • Any patient with diabetes and another medical condition e.g. dysphagia, inflammatory bowel disease, renal disease requiring further diabetes input
  • Weight management support (may be triaged to Borders Weight Management)

Who not to refer:

For those patients with Pre-diabetes please refer to the Weight management team.
